Characters Name: Jinpachi Toudou
Age: 17-18, he's in his senior year of high school and both his birthday and canon point are during the summer, though his birthday is in August and the Inter-High probably takes place a little earlier than that... so lmao I guess instead of being like two weeks from turning 18 he'll get to wait a few months. 17!!!
Canon: Yowamushi Pedal
Canon Point: Episode 26
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Orientation: Uhhh maybe bisexual?? He brags all the time about how popular he is with girls and how he can give all the guys lessons in how to interact with them!!! except that he... is never actually shown interacting with any or showing any real interest of any kind in anyone but Makishima, who he basically treats like his girlfriend tbh (to the extent that someone listening to him during one of his phone calls blushed and asked if that was one of his fangirls he was talking to).
History:
Canon never really goes into his history much, though his personality and the nice ryokan his parents own both seem to point to his being someone who hasn't faced very much adversity in life.
Everything we do see of him has occurred within the past year, starting with a flashback to one of his second year races where he first met Makishima. In that flashback, he met Makishima before a race and commented on how he'd never heard of his school when they passed each other, only to get a deadpan insult about his headband in return (so he shot back saying Makishima looked like a beetle with his weird hair). Makishima beat him in that race, to his dismay, and Toudou expressed his frustration that Makishima wasn't even smiling after beating him. He quickly discovered this was because Makishima's smiles are terrifying (so he attempted to teach him how to smile like a normal person).
They raced each other several more times over that year and always ended up being the two fighting for the finish line. Over the course of those races, they warmed up to each other a lot, with Toudou nicknaming him Maki-chan and starting to call him all the time, often just to check in on whether he was taking care of himself. In the end, they each ended up with an even number of wins and losses -- technically Toudou had one more win, but he refused to count that instance because Makishima had had to drop out of the race due to two flat tires and they hadn't been able to challenge each other properly. He vowed to face him for their final challenge at the next national Inter-High race, which he said was the first promise he'd ever made.
During that race, when they got to the mountain section, Toudou was ready for the race they promised each other, but Makishima couldn't do it after all because he'd had to take Onoda's place drafting for his team. Toudou wasn't willing to accept this at all, and got extremely upset about it -- they were both third years, so this was the last chance they'd ever have. When it finally became clear to him that it wasn't going to happen, he broke away to pursue the checkpoint on his own, just wanting the race to be over now that he wouldn't be able to go up against Makishima like he wanted.
Eventually, though, Onoda made it back to the team and Makishima was finally able to go after Toudou. He managed to catch up despite starting far behind, and Toudou was ecstatic, immediately getting his drive back. They both gave it everything they had, and ended up crossing the finish line less than a second apart, with Toudou reaching it first. When it was over, he expressed genuine gratitude to Makishima for sharing the experience with him.
Later, during that day's awards ceremony, when Toudou was up on the stage being awarded the red zekken for being the first to reach the mountain checkpoint, he took the microphone away from the announcer to give credit to his "lifetime rival, Makishima Yuusuke," and to invite him to join him on the stage because they won it together. (Makishima did not join him.) Afterward, he came over to thank Onoda for making their race possible, but also warned that it would be a battle from there on out.
(The manga has gone a lot further, though he doesn't play a huge role in it, but this is about as far as the anime has gotten so far, and I'm taking him from before the race to the mountain checkpoint anyway.)
Appearance: Average height with a lean, athletic build. He has dark violet-black hair that's a little above shoulder length, and always wears it pulled back out of his face with a headband, with a few strategically placed strands kept loose. His narrow eyes and sharply arched brows give him kind of a permanently haughty look, even if that's not always appropriate to how he's actually acting (though it often is.....). I think it's clear which one he is here.
Personality:
Let's be honest: More than anything, Toudou is annoying.
For one, he's very vain, both in regard to his appearance/popularity and his cycling skills. He's always bragging about his popularity and all his fangirls, and he keeps a mirror and a bunch of headbands in his locker -- it looks more like it should belong to a cheerleader than to a road racer. He introduces himself to people as "the most beautiful member of Hakogaku's team" -- he actually mentions how beautiful he is three fucking times in his introduction to Onoda -- and insists on being called the Sleeping Beauty of the forest (due to the way he accelerates silently to sneak up on opponents -- though everyone else just calls him the Forest Ninja, which he thinks is totally uncool). When it comes to his confidence in his cycling, he knows that he's the top climber (with only Makishima on his same level). He refers to himself as a prodigy, and when Onoda seems taken aback by him, Toudou asks if it's because he can already tell how amazing he is. He's known as the Mountain God and the King of the Mountains, too -- he has a lot of titles and he's proud of all of them.
He can also be an overbearing know-it-all. He's constantly lecturing Makishima and his teammates on their unhealthy eating habits and telling them things they already know, and can come off as pretty condescending. He's also really adamant that people get by on the merits of their own work -- in one omake, he gets really frustrated that Arakita is asking to copy Fukutomi's homework answers, and tells Fukutomi not to do it because Arakita needs to learn the material himself.
This is all exacerbated by the fact that he tends to be very loud. He's almost always talking, often about things nobody cares to listen to (and seems incapable of keeping secrets, because he just keeps going until he ends up revealing almost everything). When he gets riled up -- which isn't hard to do at all -- he ends up shouting a lot, and even his laugh is loud and obnoxious. And he's incredibly persistent about making himself heard -- there always seem to be at least a half dozen missed calls from him any time Makishima looks at his phone.
He's excessively dramatic, whether intentional -- like when he's striking some variation of his trademark pose -- or otherwise. He comes off as childish and overreacts to many things, both good and bad; but more than anything, this is because he's such an emotional person. His feelings might not be particularly deep or complex, but they're always strong. His promise with Makishima to settle things between them with their final race is incredibly important to him, and when it looks like Makishima isn't going to be able to race him after all, he gets extremely upset and angry, even crying about it. It's their last high school race and the last time they'll be able to face each other like this, and the idea that they won't be able to is intolerable to him. Other members of his school's bike racing club are able to notice even from a distance how much his attitude and riding change when he's upset over this -- while he usually greatly enjoys riding, in this case, all he wants is for it to be over, and he doesn't even acknowledge the fans cheering him on. When Makishima ends up catching up to him after all, he's completely overjoyed.
As annoying as all of his nagging is, it's clearly always well intentioned. He wants everyone on his team to eat nutritious food so they can be at their best when they race, and he wants to make sure Makishima's drying his hair and staying warm at night so he doesn't get sick, and he wants Arakita to do his own homework because he wants him to learn from it and get something out of it. He also tends to be pretty supportive of other people in general as far as biking goes (he's... much less generous about appearances); he's definitely quick to critique, but he wants to see people make use of what they're good at and do their best. He also likes to think of himself as something of a mentor to Manami and later to Onoda, the first year climbers. He worries a lot over the people he cares about, as evidenced by the way he was panicking over hearing what he thought was a big physical fight between Fukutomi and the Sohoku team over the phone.
Despite how over the top he tends to be, he can also be serious and realistic about the things that are important to him. He takes cycling very seriously; as capricious as he can be, he's not unreliable like Manami, who tends to follow his own whims and ends up late to everything. Toudou may place a lot of emotional significance on races between friends, but he's never had any idealistic illusions about them -- he knows that it's always a battle, and he will always do what he has to in order to give that fight his all. This is probably a big part of the reason why, in spite of everything, he really is a very popular person with lots of fans, and someone who other riders genuinely respect and look up to.
Abilities: He's a fucking rock star at riding bikes up mountains!!!
Other: Iiiii don't think there's anything else?

First Person: Meme thread... though if comment spam/transitions to action don't count, there's also this sexting meme thread lmfao...
Third Person:
When you're riding your bike in a race through your hometown, it's safe to say that waking up on a quiet lawn in a neighborhood you've never seen before with neither your bike nor anybody else's in sight is one of the last things you expect to happen next.
...
What???
Toudou immediately jumps to his feet and glances up and down the street. He's ridden the route the course was on a million times, he's studied it, and he knows for a fact that no street like this was ever a part of it. And even if he didn't know the course like the back of his hand, Mt. Hakone would definitely still be visible from anywhere in the region -- but everything he can see around him here is flat and boring and terrible. If he's somehow ended up this far away and can't even find his bike...
He should probably be more concerned about the fact that he doesn't know where he is and apparently blacked out than he should be about missing the race, but he isn't. He'd been waiting for this race for so long, and they weren't going to have another chance... no one was allowed to take this away from him. This day was meant for him and Maki-chan.
Maki-chan... he'd just passed Toudou a minute earlier, so if one of them had ended up... wherever the hell this was, it wasn't improbable that both of them would be nearby, right? Right!!! He grabs his phone from the back pocket of his jersey and starts typing up a message.
